Extramural Sports
Students have the opportunity to participate in extramural sports teams. Student athletes practice after school, playing home and away games against other school teams. This competition develops great friendships, teamwork and a good work ethic for students.
A completed Athletic Participation and Preparation Physical and Consent & Release forms must be on file in the before the student may tryout, practice, or play.
Eligibility
• Students must have a 2.00 GPA the previous grading period in order to participate. The last grading period of the previous school year will be used to determine the GPA requirement for the first grading period.
• The principal has the authority to withhold participation even if the student does meet the GPA requirement.
• No student may participate in practices/games while in ISS/OSS or while assigned to an alternative school.
• Any student ejected from a contest will be suspended from the next 2 contests of that sport. If that sport concludes before the 2 contest suspension has been served, the 2 contest suspension carries over to the next sport or into the next school year.
• No student may participate after reaching his/her 16th birthday.
• Students only have the opportunity to participate once in each grade level. A student retained is not eligible that second year of the same grade level.
• A completed Athletic Participation and Preparation Physical form must be on file in the before the student may practice or play. This form is required each year.
• Any Home School, Charter or Choice school student wishing to play for their zoned school must notify the school in writing their intent to try out before the first day of the season. Students must show proof of residency before trying out.
• All public school students are covered by the School District “secondary” insurance policy.
Girls Basketball (1st Quarter)
• Played during the 1st grading period.
• First Contest: Day 12 of the grading period.
• Maximum # of contests – 6
• JV team (6/7 graders only); Varsity team (any grade level)
• Games start at 6 pm (if only 1 game- still starts at 6 pm)
• JV game – 8 minute running clock per quarter
• Varsity game – 10 minute running clock per quarter
• Last minute of each half clock will start/stop as in a regular game
• Game ends if team is ahead by 35 points
• All other basketball rules are in effect
Girls & Boys Cross Country (1st Quarter)
• Matches occur during the 1st grading period.
• First Contest day on or after day 16 of the grading period.
• Maximum number of meets – 6
• Meets start at 6pm or later.
• All other Cross Country rules are in effect.
Boys Basketball (2nd Quarter)
• Played during the 2nd grading period.
• First Contest: Day 12 of the grading period.
• Maximum # of contests – 6
• JV team (6/7 graders only); varsity team (any grade level)
• Games start at 6 pm (if only 1 game-still starts at 6 pm)
• JV games – 8 minute running clock per quarter
• Varsity games – 10 minute running clock per quarter
• Last minute of each half clock will start/stop like a regular game.
• Game end if team is ahead by 35 points
• All other basketball rules are in effect
Girls Volleyball (2nd Quarter)
• Played during the 2nd grading period.
• First Contest: Day 12 of the grading period.
• Maximum # of contests – 6
• Games start at 6 pm (if only 1 game-still starts at 6 pm)
• Best 2 out of 3; rallying scoring: 21-21-15
• JV team (6/7 graders only); Varsity team (any grade level)
• Warmups: 5 minutes each team on the court; 2 minutes serving with both teams on the court at the same time.
• Coach/Officials conference at 20 minutes before game time.
• No balls in the gym once the game starts.
• 2 timeouts allowed per game.
• 3 minute break between games.
• All other volleyball rules are in effect.
• No jewelry of any kind permitted.
• Schools must provide ADULT line judges.
Boys/Girls Soccer (3rd Quarter)
- Played during the 3rd grading period.
- First Contest: Day 12 of the grading period.
- Maximum # of contests – 6
- Both boys and girls teams may field a Varsity team.
- Games start at 6 pm (if only 1 game-still starts at 6 pm)
- Varsity games played in 30 minute halves with 5 minute break between halves.
- All other soccer rules are in effect
Girls/Boys Tennis (4th Quarter)
• Played during the 4th grading period.
• Maximum # of matches – 6
• Team consists of 6 boys and 6 girls
• Two boys double teams; two girls doubles teams and two mixed doubles teams.
• No player can play in more than one match
• All matches will be Pro Set to 8. Tie breaker will be played at 7 to 7.
• All games will be a no-add scoring
• All games won will count toward determining the winning team.
Girls/Boys Track (4th Quarter)
• Played during the 4th grading period.
• First Track Meet: Day 12 of the grading period.
• Maximum # of meets- 4 plus county invitational.
• Individual Meets – maximum of 3 schools per site.
• Schools may enter 3 participants per event, one participant must be a 6th grader; only 1 relay team (no restriction on grade level).
• Individual student may enter a maximum of 3 events (includes the relays)
• List of events: 100 dash; 200 dash; 400 run; 800 run; 1600 run; 4 X 100 relay; 4 X 400 relay; sprint medley relay; shot put; long jump.
Golf (4th Quarter)
- Played during the 4th grading period.
- Maximum # of matches – 6, plus county invitational.
- Each team comprised of 6 players; best 4 scores count toward determining team winner.
- Maximum of 3 teams at each site.
- Teams use the Circle 8 scoring system.
- Teams play 5 holes unless playing at a Par 3 course when 9 holes will be played.
- County Invitational is 9 holes.
P.E.
As an IB school we introduce sports from around the world like badminton, soccer, volleyball, basketball and stick ball. Facilities include boys and girls locker rooms, indoor gymnasium, and outdoor fields.
Students also learn about personal health and fitness, CPR skills, anatomy, and the difference between health related and skill related fitness.
Clubs
A-Team

The A-Team is a highly academic competition for middle school students. It is a slow paced question competition in which players are asked questions from the areas of mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, the fine arts, world language, and technology. There will be 3 six-member teams, one for each grade level that will represent the school at the Spring county level tournament. The A-Team will meet on Thursdays through March. There is a $10 charge for club t-shirts.
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)

F.B.L.A. is a non-profit, local, district, state, and nationally affiliated organization for middle and high school students participating in business programs. F.B.L.A.’s mission is: To bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month. Dues are $20.00 per year.
Math Counts

Math Counts is an activity for 6th – 8th grade students with exceptional math ability and an interest in learning to solve challenging problems. Skills learned are useful on math tests such as the SAT or ACT exams and in high school math classes. The top eight students will represent the school in the spring at a county level tournament. Top county teams go on to the state tournament. The Math Counts team will meet on Wednesdays through March.
National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility. Selection is based on the student’s service, leadership, character, and citizenship during his/her 7th grade year at L.C.M.A. A GPA of 3.7 or above is required for membership. Members are expected to maintain the standards of the Lawton Chiles Middle Academy Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The Honor Society meets 4 to 5 times a year. There is a $10 induction fee.
Student Council

Membership in the Student Council is comprised of one student from every 1st period class. Student Council representatives are elected by their classmates to report the views of their classmates at each Student Council meeting. The Council meetings are held before school as announced.
Sunshine State Young Readers Book Festival Club (SSYR)

The SSYR Book Festival Club is open to those students who would like to participate in the annual Book Festival held each year by the Polk County Media Services Department. Each member will be required to read all 15 books by the end of December and to assist in creating various items required by the Book Festival. This club will meet on the first and third Friday of each month.
